  U
  UHF SIGNAL :

Ultra high frequency signal. In television it is defined to belong in the radio spectrum
between 470 MHz and 850 MHz.

  ULINK TO :
Transmit to a satellite for relay; also, the dish used to transmit.
  UNBALANCED SIGNAL :
In CCTV, this refers to a type of video signal transmission through a coaxial cable. It is called unbalanced because the signal travels through the center core only, while the cable shield is used for equating the two voltage potentials between the coaxial cable ends.
  UNDERSCAN :
Decreases raster size H and V so that all four edges of the picture are visible on the monitor.
  UNTERMINATED :

Video input of apiece of equipment, wired so as to allow the video signal to be fed to further equipment. Does not necessarily include extra sockets for the extra cables.

  UPS (UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY) :

A battery, attached to a piece of hardware, for example a server, that provides back up power for conducting an orderly shutdown if the server's normal power supply fails.

  UTP :
Unshielded twisted pair. A cable medium with one or more pairs of twisted insulated copper
conductors bound in a single sheath. Now the most common method of bringing telephone and data to the desktop.
  V
  VANDALISM :

Criminal damage against households and household property only.

  VARI-FOCAL :

A low cost version of a zoom lens designed to meet installers needs for versatility. This lens does not have the ability to track from wide to telephoto.

  VARI FOCAL LENS :

A cctv camera lens whose focal length / viewing angle can be manually adjusted to suit the camera view required. Typical Vari Focal lens lengths are: 2.5mm-10mm, 3.5mm-8mm, 5mm-50mm

  VHF VERY HIGH FREQUENCY :

The part of the radio spectrum from 54 to 88 MHz and 174 to 216 MHz, which includes TV channels 2 through 13.

  V.H.S. (VIDEO HOME SYSTEM) :

Name given to ½" tapes, used with domestic video recorders.

  VERTICAL RESOLUTION :

The number of horizontal lines that can be seen in the reproduced image of a television pattern.

  VEXT :

Multiplexer feature that uses a pulse generated by the VCR to automatically adjust to the VCR time lapse speed.

  VIDEO AMPLIFIER :

A wideband amplifier used for passing picture signals.

  VIDEO BAND :

The frequency band width utilized to transmit a composite video signal.

  VIDEO SIGNAL (NON-COMPOSITE) :

The picture signal. A signal containing visual information and horizontal and vertical blanking (see also Composite Video Signal) but not sync.

  VIDEO SPLITTER :

CCTV device that splits the video signal from a camera (or cameras) so it can be used more than once.

  VIDEO SWITCHER :

A device to enable different cameras to be selected to a monitor. The switching is normally arranged to take place during the blanking period of the video signal to prevent a picture

  VIDEO TAPE RECORDER :

A device which stores video signals on magnetic tape for retrieval at a later time.

  VIDEO TYPE LENS :
An auto-iris lens with internal circuitry for processing of the video signal which controls the iris movements.
  VMD (VIDEO MOTION DETECTION) :

A method of detecting movement in the view of the camera by electronic analysis of the change in picture contrast.

  W
  WAN (WIDE AREA NETWORK) :
A network that covers a larger geographical area than a LAN and where telecommunications links are implemented, normally leased from the appropriate PTO(s). Examples of WANs include packet switched networks, public data networks and Value Added Networks.

  WAVE LENGTH :

Distance between the same two points on adjacent waves, or the time necessary for a wave to complete a single cycle.

  WAVEFORM MONITOR :

Oscilloscope used to display the video waveform.

  WAVELET :

A particular type of video compression that is especially suitable for CCTV. Offers higher compression ratio with equal or better quality to JPEG.

  WHITE BALANCE :

An electronic process used in video cameras to retain true colors. It is performed electronically on the basis of a white object in the picture.

  WHITE LEVEL :

This part of the video signal electronically represents the white part of an image. It resides at 0.7 V from the blanking level, whereas the black part is taken as 0 V.

  WIRELESS TRANSMISSION :

A technology in which electronic devices send information to receivers using radio waves rather than wiring.

  WORKSTATION :

Term used freely to mean a PC, node, terminal or high-end desktop processor (for CAD/CAM and similar intensive applications) - in short, a device that has data input and output and operated by a user.

  WOW AND FLUTTER :

Wow refers to low frequency variations in pitch while flutter refers to highfrequency variations in pitch caused by variations in the tape-to-head speed of a tape machine.

  W-VHS :

A new wide-VHS standard proposed by JVC, featuring a high resolution format and an aspect ratio of 16:9.

  Y
  Y/C :

A video format found in Super-VHS video recorders. Luminance is marked with Y and is produced separate to the C, which stands for chrominance. Thus, an S-VHS output Y/C requires two coaxial cables for a perfect output.

  Y, R-Y, B-Y :

The general set of component video signals used in the PAL system as well as for some encoder and most decoder applications in NTSC systems; Y is the luminance signal, R-Y is
the first color difference signal and B-Y is the second color difference signal.

  Y SIGNAL :

A signal transmitted in color television containing brightness information. This signal produces a black and white picture on a standard monochrome receiver. In a color picture it supplies fine detail and brightness information. An optical system of continuously variable focal length, the focal plane remaining in a fixed position.

  Y, U, V :

Luminance and color difference components for PAL systems; Y, B-Y, R-Y with new names; the derivation from RGB is identical.

  Z

ZAPPING

:

Changing the channel by remote control during a program to avoid a commercial.

  ZIPPING :

Fast-forwarding through commercials when playing back a program on a VCR.

ZOOM LENS

:

A lens with the ability to change its focal length manually or through the use of a controller to cover a variety of needs.

  ZOOM RATIO :

The ratio of the starting focal length (wide) to the ending focal length (telephoto) of a zoom lens. A 10X zoom will magnify the image at the wide end by 10 times. Examples of a 10X zoom lenses; 8mm~80mm, 12mm~120mm.
